Poisoning to kill rats is a temporary solution at best.  At worst, the home will be filled will dead rat odor of animals lost in the walls or obscure parts of the attic where they cannot be found.  Even if rats don't die in the attic or walls, new rats will continue to get into the home.

RAT PROBLEMS IN THE ATTIC ARE STRUCTURAL PROBLEMS.

The building or house with rats is somehow allowing the critters to get in.  The home must be inspected to find all the entry points and weaknesses and repair work done to seal these areas. Killing via poison is somewhat effective to keep their numbers low, but the death can occur anywhere often creating a dead animal odor problem.
trapping to get rid of rats

Catching rats in rat traps is far more effective way of killing the infesting mice or roof rats. Most people who think they have mice in the home actually have rats, so when deciding which size trap to get... always buy the larger size snap trap (it even works for mice anyways).

TRAPPED RATS ARE EASY TO GET OUT.

A dead rat is a lot easier to find when it dies from a trap and isn't killed by poison.  Killing rats via traps is part of the solution but to eliminate the infestation, work on the building must take place. In Fort Lauderdale, Wildlife Patrol controls the building the same day the traps are set to increase the speed and efficiency of the rat control solution.

  • 1). cut all branches 3 ft from roof, rats love to nest in trees, and with branches touching the rooftop, the Ft Lauderdale homeowner will have more rats looking to get in the home

  • 2). find the entry points by searching everywhere, take your time inspecting the roof, attic, and eave - concentrate the inspection at corners of the roof along the eave

  • 3). cover the attic with 12-20 large snap rat traps set with dog food and peanut butter as bait to kill the rats in the traps

  • 4). clean out attic insulation to remove rodent scent factors by vacuuming out dropping once the rats have been killed and controlled out of the home attic

  • To kill the rats, the ancients used cats. Modern exterminators have tried potent poisons like strychnine and zinc phosphide. They not only kill rats but friendly animals and unwary human beings as well. In 1947, a better weapon appeared: an anticoagulant called warfarin. In small doses, it is safe for large animals. But when a rat ate the rat poinson, it caused internal bleeding and killed it, usually within 5 days. For about 25 years, man felt he had the rat on the run. No more. British health authorities have discovered that brown "house" rats  in Wales and black "roof" rats on Liverpool's docks now eat warfarin as casually and are not killed. A new immune rodent has developed—the super-rat. Specialists hoped that the new immunity would be isolated to England. But last week the WHO reported that immunity has been discovered in brown rats in Holland, Denmark, West Germany and the U.S. Said WHO: "The world is facing up to an international menace." No reports of super-rat in Ft. Lauderdale or Miami.
